History: About the MicroEichler

HISTORY

The MicroEichler idea began as many things do — out of necessity and legacy.

Like many Eichler owners, the backyard of our 60 year old home came with its own "personality"... a few full-grown trees that would be a crime to tear out, some 70s-era concrete, way too many plants and a failing fence. Also, like many Eichler owners, we had big plans, but a small budget which meant changing the vibe completely was out of reach — we had to work with a bit of what we already had.

The previous owners of our home were original owners. They had nine children and were wheelchair-bound toward the end of their lives... this meant lots of hard-scaping added later and way too many plants and trees for the space. We joke that each kid planted three trees which sprouted three more trees. Of course, we needed to remove a good bit of material, but scraping everything was impractical and far too expensive. We did have to remove several dozen trees, but the California Pepper and Mimosa/Silk trees remained and were incorporated into the new plan. And even when removing 50% of the existing concrete, there was still too much hard-scaping for our tastes.

The California Pepper tree's roots heaved one of the concrete pads in this area, so it needed to be removed... but what to do with this space?
